Stone, or mineral wool insulation has been used in exterior wall assemblies for approximately fifty years and is the primary insulation in use beyond North America. The thermal performance of stone wool insulation is generally believed to be sensitive to moisture, similar to light-density fiberglass batt insulation. However, because stone wool insulation is hydrophobic, it can be used in wet areas where it may be exposed to condensation, rain water, and is effective in below-grade applications. When the insulation becomes wet, the R-value decreases until dry - which generally may take a few hours or up to one day - compared to a duration of weeks or months for other insulation types. Due to the material properties of stone wool insulation, it can absorb approximately 5 percent of its total volume before thermal performance is affected. Because it is vapor permeable, it can be designed within wall assemblies to protect against the development of organic growth, corrosion, and decay. The manufacturing process is environmentally friendly and health risks are limited compared to some other insulation products. John Straube will discuss his practical experience and laboratory study of stone wool insulation and address your questions about its use.

John Straube is a principal of Building Science Laboratories / Building Science Consulting Inc.  and a professor of building science in the Civil Engineering Department and School of Architecture at the University of Waterloo.

For those who qualify, 1.5 LUs/HSW are available

Spray Polyurethane Foam Best Practices

Spray polyurethane foam used successfully in insulating buildings will be reviewed. Understanding the product’s performance characteristics can help an architect integrate it successfully in detailing. Understanding how it is installed and best practices for installation will inform proper detailing, specification and inspection in the field. Do’s and don’ts will be reviewed, also code requirements and testing. Successful projects will be reviewed as well as failures we should learn from.

Establishing owner performance requirements has been shown to lead to successful outcomes. To kick off BEC’s fall series on this topic, we welcome Roger Grant of NIBS who will present and lead a discussion on establishing performance-based planning and design objectives and analyzing results to support decision-making. Roger will introduce systems such as the General Services Administration’s (GSA’s) new performance-based P100 Facilities Standards for the Public Buildings Service and the complementary National Performance-Based Design Guide.

Please note that for October Meeting we will not be having a regular presentation. Instead we will be hosting an open dialog on two items which will be affecting the way building enclosures are built in the future. The first topic is the standardizing of the building enclosure commissioning process and the new commissioning standards and certifications. The second topic will focus on how local design professionals are approaching sustainability and resiliency in the built environment with regards to the building enclosure performance and design.

We hope that you will be able to join us.
